How Long Before Going in the Sun Should I apply Sunscreen?

The active ingredients in sunscreen work as soon as they are applied to your skin, so you are technically safe as soon as the sunscreen is applied to your skin. If you are planning on going into the ocean or water in general, applying sunscreen 10 – 20 minutes before entering is recommended. This allows the sunscreen to absorb into the skin which makes it less likely to wash off. With that said, newer sunscreens are designed to be resistant to being washed off, although letting it absorb for a while can’t hurt.

How much Sunscreen should I put on?

In total, an amount equal to the size of ping pong ball should be enough to cover your whole body. Most sunscreen users tend to not put on enough sunscreen, which may not offer them as much protection as they think it is. As a general rule, just make sure to cover your entire body with a layer of sunscreen that needs to be rubbed in.

How Often Should I Put On Sunscreen When I’m In the Sun?

Most experts would say to apply sunscreen frequently if you’re going to be in the sun all day, however we recommend once every three hours or so. Anymore than that usually is excessive and could be considered a waste. If you are going to be in and out of water all day though, sunscreen will usually come off faster, especially if you’re using a towel to dry off with. We recommend applying sunscreen once every two hours if you’re going to be swimming.
